Module Objectives

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the frequency of co-morbidity between substance use disorder and other major psychiatric diagnoses.
  2. Identify psychiatric conditions most likely to present in a patient also diagnosed with a substance use disorder.
  3. Understand the DSM 5 diagnostic criteria for psychiatric conditions (with a focus on mood, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders) and recognize how to utilize this information in the care of patients.
  4. Explain how to differentiate a substance-induced psychiatric disorder from a co-occurring psychiatric disorder.
  5. Discuss the approach to treatment of psychiatric diagnoses co-presenting with a substance use disorder, including both pharmacologic and psychotherapy modalities.
